Evolution of Putrajaya’s Intelligent Traffic Management System

Since its initial deployment, Perbadanan Putrajaya has continuously evolved its traffic management infrastructure to ensure efficient urban mobility. Below is a timeline and overview of the city’s traffic system implementations from 2004 to the present.

The ITACA Era (2004 – Present)

Beginning in 2004, Perbadanan Putrajaya implemented the Intelligent Traffic Adaptive Control Agent (ITACA) system to manage the city’s intersections.

  • Scale of Implementation: The ITACA system has been deployed across more than 140 traffic light junctions throughout Putrajaya.
  • Network Infrastructure: To ensure secure and seamless communication, the entire system operates exclusively on Putranet, Putrajaya’s dedicated private network.

System Dashboard Modernization (2022)

As urban traffic demands grew, the system required better monitoring and data visualization capabilities.

  • EcoTrafiX Upgrade: In 2022, Perbadanan Putrajaya upgraded the central system dashboard to EcoTrafiX.
  • Hardware Retention: Despite the software modernization at the command center, the physical intersections continued to run reliably on the original ITACA traffic controllers.

The Future of Putrajaya Traffic Management (2025 Onward)

As of 2025, Putrajaya is undergoing a massive infrastructure overhaul to transition into a next-generation smart city.

  • SCATS Integration: The city is currently in the process of upgrading its entire Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) to the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) utilizing the new Turbine Adaptive Traffic Signal Controller (TASC).
  • SCATS Priority Engine (SPE): Once completed, the SPE module will provide a “green lane” (signal priority) for Perbadanan Putrajaya’s Nadiputra bus fleet and emergency vehicles, significantly improving transit efficiency and emergency response times.
  • AI Camera Implementation: Alongside SCATS, Perbadanan Putrajaya is deploying AI-powered cameras at junctions to enable real-time, highly responsive traffic analytics and adaptive control.

Summary: Over the past two decades, Putrajaya’s traffic management has matured from the foundational ITACA system running on the private Putranet to an upgraded EcoTrafiX interface, and is now transitioning toward a state-of-the-art ATMS powered by SCATS (TASC) and Artificial Intelligence.
