Overview
Located in Presint 5, the Fasiliti Inovasi Kitar Semula (FIKS) is a cornerstone of Putrajaya’s sustainable urban development. Spanning 5.67 acres, FIKS is designed as an integrated circular economy model and educational hub, transitioning municipal solid waste management from a linear “take-make-waste” model to a closed-loop system. Operated by Alam Flora Environmental Solutions (AFES) with the strategic support of Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPJ) and SWCorp, the facility demonstrates how industrial recycling processes can co-exist with public advocacy and research.
A Model of Circular Economy & Sustainable Architecture
FIKS is structurally built using the “5R” philosophy (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle). The main facility structure is constructed using repurposed shipping containers and recycled timber pallets, demonstrating functional, eco-friendly architecture with minimal embodied carbon.
The site is divided into two operational zones:
- Fasiliti Pembelajaran Kitar Semula (Educational Zone):
- Hab Ilmu (Knowledge Hub): A dedicated center where students, community groups, and researchers can learn about the solid waste lifecycle and circular economy mechanics in Putrajaya.
- Koc Ilmu (Knowledge Coach): An ingenious repurposing of a decommissioned monorail train car into a vibrant children’s library and interactive play area, making environmental education accessible to the next generation.
- Integrated Recycling Facility (IRF) (Processing Zone):
- An active industrial processing site where collected dry recyclables are sorted.
- Baling Processes: Utilizes semi-automated hydraulic baling presses to compact paper, cardboard, and plastic waste for efficient logistics.
- Plastic Granulation: Features a specialized granulating machine that processes post-consumer plastics (HDPE, PET, etc.) into raw plastic granules, preparing them for secondary manufacturing.
Innovation in Action: Waste-to-Energy Recovery
To address municipal organic waste, FIKS features an advanced Anaerobic Digester (AD) facility. The digester processes food waste biologically in an oxygen-depleted environment to produce biogas. This recovered methane is piped directly on-site to power functional applications including kitchen cooking stoves and exterior lighting, serving as a tangible proof-of-concept for localized municipal waste-to-energy systems.
